As companies grow and are required to hire more people, they expand geographically to tap into new markets, and source the best talent. In tech, we’re even seeing companies that are operating with entirely remote teams and no physical office space.
When teams become distributed across multiple offices or remotely, it comes with its own set of challenges. We thought it would be valuable to shed some light on these challenges as well as provide managers and teams with a few ideas for how to overcome them.
The first challenge is communication. Communication is the most important thing that a team can have, and is one of the hardest things to maintain. This might seem obvious, but it can really effect the working environment and culture that is shaped at your company. The best way to overcome this is by putting processes in place like check ins, stand ups, and technology to keep your team connected and on track.
Second, it can be harder for coworkers to get to know each other on a personal level when they are in the same office, let alone when they are located in different countries. It’s important to be intentional about setting time to connect with different people from your company, to get to know each other. Whether its a virtual meeting or a Friday happy hour, set time for your team to celebrate the wins both in and outside of work. It can also be valuable to bring everyone together periodically for company retreats, or encouraging remote employees to come into your offices (if you have them). In short, cook team building into your company culture.
Another challenge that teams often face when they are distributed is maintaining alignment. One of the best ways to overcome this is by implementing and practicing goals, processes, rituals, across the company. If you don’t share goals and practices throughout your organization, it can be easier for some offices to develop a different culture or level of engagement.
